Nutrition

A child’s largest, most measurable growth, mental and physical development happens in the first six years of their lives. Effectively this is the “sponge” stage where they soak up everything. Their brains are malleable and highly impressionable at this time. Therefore it is crucial that we monitor the following:

Weight and height – every 3 to 6 months to monitor physical growth
Head Circumference – every 3 to 6 months to monitor brain growth

This assessments allows us to identify timeously if a child’s lack of growth is possibly influenced by pathological problems or a nutritional insufficiency.

The cornerstone of a healthy body is a healthy mind! Neither a body nor its computer, the brain, can work effectively if it’s not in a the correct working state as a result of being fed the right nutrients. Unfortunately chronic malnutrition is an accepted state in most of the poorer schools and grossly ignored in the more affluent areas!

If children don’t receive essential nutrients in their first 5 years of life, their brain and body development won’t occur and the opportunity for that development is lost for their lifetime. Amway scientists developed Nutrilite™ Little Bits™ to help children who have limited access to nutrition during this very important time of development so they can grow to become strong, healthy adults.

Nutrilite™ Little Bits™ aligns with World Health Organization recommendations for children 6 months to 5 years old. It is a micronutrient supplement enhanced with plant nutrients that provides 15 essential vitamins and minerals. When eaten with food daily, it can help improve a child’s health by providing nutrients required for proper growth and development.

A 1-gram package of Nutrilite™ Little Bits™ is mixed once a day with any food that the child would normally eat. The product is designed to have no taste, flavor or texture so it will be accepted by children from any culture.

Nutrilite™ Little Bits™ can help reduce and prevent micronutrient deficiency, including iron deficiency anemia. Scientific research has shown that this can improve important developmental behaviors in children – such as being more active, more talkative and more interested in learning and playing. Nutrilite™ Little Bits™ is currently helping thousands of malnourished children around the world survive, thrive and grow.

Deworming – done every 6 months
Deworming is a critical part of our programme – it is a prophylactic treatment that every child gets. These children play and run around bare foot and often personal hygiene is not up to standard. Worm infestation mostly starts off in the intestinal tract “living” on a human’s nutritional intake therefore starving the body – and the brain – of vital nutrients to grow and improve. Bi-annual deworming is of critical value for both physical and mental growth. Children having worms is largely attributable to a lack of development for the young ones that we work with.

Haemoglobin Monitoring –done once a year
This procedure is done to detect low Iron levels that will give us an indication whether a child is getting sufficient oxygen supply to the brain – again ultimately inhibiting physical and mental growth.
